The highly anticipated Louis Vuitton “A Passion for Creation” exhibition is now open. Showcasing an comprehensive list of artist compiled by the Fondation Louis Vuitton pour la Création with various mediums of work a huge attraction at the Hong Kong Museum of Art. This remarkable installation includes some names that just run of your tongue with frequent LV collaborators Takashi Murakami, Richard Prince and Stephen Sprouse. While other names include the likes of Jean Michel Basquiat, Paul Chan, Cao-Fei, Yang Fudong, Gilbert & George, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Andreas Gursky, Pierre Huyghe, Jeff Koons, Bertrand Lavier, Christian Marclay, Richard Prince all included. The exhibition is open until August 9, so if you are planning a summer holiday why not head over to Hong Kong.

When a fashion mastermind appears in your establishment without a cent to spare to cover his charges what do you do? Well in ‘91 Andre Balazs, the owner of Chateau Marmont, was presented with said dilemma as Stephen Sprouse fell under despair and wasn’t able to cover his charges for his stay. The soon to be genius owner decided to barter with Sprouse and accept 6 pieces of original Sprouse designs exclusive to Chateau Marmont. Recently these sketches were uncovered in the attic of the famed establishment and have been released to the public. Notcot give us the first look at sketch 1 of the 6, featuring the recognizable Sprouse textual treatment and flamboyant aesthetics. The remaining 5 sketches will be released at a later date, but with such a fascinating story i’m sure it just a matter of time before the collection sees the light of day.

While much of the talk around Louis Vuitton’s tribute to the great Stephen Sprouse has surrounded the book launch and LV store fit outs, the capsule collection created by Marc Jacobs has also released. “Reinterpreting the celebrated graffiti print, which arguably kicked-off the ‘It bag’ craze, Jacobs has taken Sprouse’s two motifs – the graffiti and the rose – and splashed them across a selection of small leather goods and streetwear: t-shirt dresses, jeans, sneakers and even a skateboard (complete with Louis Vuitton case).”There’s a small range of mens and womens clothing available at Louis Vuitton stores, the mens collection includes the iconic sneaker, black on black graffiti jeans and tee’s.

“They say everything old is new again, and that was certainly the case Thursday night”. An epic evening was held in honor of Stephen Sprouse, the late fashion designer and artist. The Louis Vuitton store attracted guests like Deborah Harry where she performed at a club on the Bowary shortly after and Paige Powell as the highly coveted collection of bags were launched while Marc Jacobs showed up adorning Louis Vuitton tights while the rest of the names run of your tongue.

LEBOOK have announced the release of its 2009 New York edition, paying special tribute to the great Stephen Sprouse, fittingly alongside the 5th anniversary of the “punk glamor god’s,” passing, and with numerous other tributes being paid, especially from Louis Vuitton. This special edition of the French insider’s periodical is a great collectors piece.

LE BOOK — the international reference for the creative industry — announces the release of its New York 2009 edition, art by fashion “punk glamour god” and design icon Stephen Sprouse (1953 – 2004). This year marks the five-year anniversary of Sprouse’s passing and LE BOOK is honored to have his work “dress” its publication, continuing a lineage of cover artists that includes Karl Lagerfeld, Yves Saint Laurent, Vivienne Westwood, Yohji Yamamoto and Azzedine Alaïa.

Sprouse is widely recognized as the “rock star” of ’80s and ’90s fashion, although his creativity extended beyond the runway to include designing album covers, sets, and multi-media installations while dressing the likes of Madonna, Courtney Love, and Mick Jagger. A member of the downtown club scene, Sprouse counted Debbie Harry and Andy Warhol among his close friends and muses. He is responsible for populari-zing Day-Glo fabrics, embossing pop-culture icons onto clothing, and hand-painting graffiti. His uncanny ability to blend high and low culture is best embodied in his creation of the infamous Louis Vuitton graffiti bag, and his influence can still be seen today in the advertising, fashion, music, and design worlds.

A true collector’s item, LE BOOK New York 2009 showcases Sprouse’s unique rock-chic aesthetic influenced by art, glamour, and grit. It’s also one of several projects showcasing the designer’s work that help make 2009 the year of Stephen Sprouse. This month Marc Jacobs will pay his tributes with the launch of a limited-edition line of accessories and ready-to-wear for Louis Vuitton with designs from their 2001 collaboration; Deitch Projects will exhibit the Stephen Sprouse retrospective, “Rock on Mars”, and Roger and Mauricio Padilha will release The Stephen Sprouse Book.

Louis Vuitton to Celebrate Stephen Sprouse Collection

Having collaborated with the eccentric Stephen Sprouse on a rather enlightening collection, Louis Vuitton have followed the roots of the artist and designer by heading downtown for release of this much talked about collection. This week, the company’s boutique on SoHo’s Greene Street will be transformed into a Sprouse destination in time for the collection’s arrival. Continue reading for the story from WWD.

“SoHo is a special place for the entire launch of the Sprouse collection,” said Daniel Lalonde, Louis Vuitton North America president and chief executive officer. “It’s in the proximity of where Stephen Sprouse hung out, so we are going to give the entire store a Stephen Sprouse feel. It will have a lot of reminders of Stephen Sprouse. We will be giving it a new identity.”

For instance, the company is wrapping the store in vinyl and spray painting neon graffiti all over the facade. The window display will feature a 6-foot neon light installation in Sprouse’s Rose motif. The store’s interior, enhanced with black brick wall facing, will also be sprayed with the neon graffiti.

The collection will launch in its entirety at the SoHo boutique on Thursday. The complete worldwide launch will follow on Feb. 2, though the Rose pieces will be available at Louis Vuitton stores worldwide starting Friday.

For the launch, the luxury goods company is also creating two limited edition pieces, which will only be available at the SoHo location: a Stephen Sprouse graffiti skateboard replete with a hard case monogram skateboard trunk, and a Stephen Sprouse “Roses” T-shirt. The company hopes to sell three graffiti skateboards with trunks for $8,250 each, and 70 T-shirts for $250 each. “I don’t expect them to last very long,” Lalonde said. “By Friday, there probably won’t be any more left.”

Proceeds will benefit Free Arts NYC, which provides underserved children throughout New York City with special arts programs. Vuitton is also making an undisclosed donation to the Sprouse Estate, as well as the Stephen Sprouse Memorial Scholarship Fund at the National Academy for Design here.

Sprouse became known in the Eighties for his graffiti art and fashion designs. In 2001, Vuitton artistic director Marc Jacobs collaborated with Sprouse and created an instant must-have accessories collection with the Monogram Graffiti collection. Sprouse died in 2004, and Vuitton made its first donation to the fund in 2006 when Jacobs created a scarf in Sprouse’s honor, using one of the collaboration’s leopard prints.

Vuitton will honor the late artist with three events this Thursday. The night will kick off with cocktails at the Vuitton boutique on Greene Street, with a simultaneous event at nearby Deitch Projects’ Wooster Street Gallery for the opening of the “Rock on Mars” Sprouse retrospective. Afterwards, Vuitton and Jacobs will host a bash at the Bowery Ballroom, featuring a performance by Sprouse’s friend Debbie Harry, followed by DJ Jus Ske. The venue is expected to have a Sprouse feel, with a special graffiti-and-neon decor.

“It’s something new from Vuitton to start the year off,” Lalonde said of the collection. “The product, design, and expression are uplifting and rejuvenating. That’s the feel we try to provide for the evening and for the collection.”

Stephen Sprouse ‘Rock on Mars’ at Deitch Projects

Rock on Mars, a retrospective exhibition of the work of Stephen Sprouse, will transform Deitch Projects’s 18 Wooster Street gallery into a realization of Sprouse’s rock and roll futuristic vision. Stephen Sprouse (1953-2004) was one of the most influential fashion designers of his time and a key figure in the dynamic mix of punk rock, wild style graffiti, and street influenced fashion that characterized the downtown New York community in the early 1980s. He was one of the first to build on the influence of Andy Warhol to create a fusion of art, music and fashion. He continued on a course that disavowed any division among these fields throughout his career.

The exhibition will introduce Sprouse’s extraordinary pop-influenced paintings to the larger art audience. His paintings of iconic rock and roll imagery including stacks of loudspeakers, Sid Vicious with his pants down, and an Iggy Pop crucifixion, have rarely been seen. The show will also include a selection of the video works made to accompany his runway shows, examples of his fabric and furniture design for Knoll, and fifty of his most influential fashion looks.

In conjunction with the exhibition project, Marc Jacobs has created a new collection for Louis Vuitton, inspired by Sprouse’s famous collaboration with Louis Vuitton in 2001, which featured the classic monogram bag scrawled with Stephen Sprouse graffiti. The new limited edition Stephen Sprouse – Louis Vuitton collection will be available in Louis Vuitton stores worldwide from January 9, 2009, the opening date of the exhibition.

Louis Vuitton pay homage to Stephen Sprouse

Picking up almost exactly where their 2001 collaboration left off, Marc Jacob’s Louis Vuitton will release a special line of pieces incorporating the signature look of Sprouse’ work. This is part of an initiative to remember the great artist who died in 2004, which will also include a January photoshoot featuring Marc Jacob’s in his favourite new look, nude, in Harpers Bazaar, shot by Terry Richardson. Coinciding also with a retrospective — called “Rock on Mars” — at Deitch Projects’ 18 Wooster Street gallery from Jan. 8 to Feb. 28, and “The Stephen Sprouse Book,” by Roger Padilha and Mauricio Padilha, due out from Rizzoli New York on Feb. 1. The Stephen Sprouse Book

A hugely iconic figure for me personally. Inventive, enigmatic, and supremely creative, Stephen Sprouse made art and clothing that captured the mood of the eighties. One of the first American designers to mix graffiti and a punk aesthetic with fashion, Sprouse manipulated conventional notions of style, and his unique sensibility has inspired designers from John Galliano to Raf Simmons to Marc Jacobs.

Sprouse’s career started in the late seventies, when, after working for Halston, he migrated to a warehouse on the Bowery and started making outfits for his neighbor, Debbie Harry. The fashion world quickly embraced his innovative, culturally relevant sensibility and downtown edge. But Sprouse’s inability to compromise his artistic vision for the rigid fashion business compromised his commercial success. The Padilhas possess the largest private collection of Sprouse’s work, and were given exclusive access to his archives by his family for this project. They also obtained never-before-published images from photographers such as Steven Meisel, Bob Gruen, and Mert and Marcus. The book features a foreword by the novelist Tama Janowitz, one of Sprouse’s closest friends. The release of this book coincides with a retrospective at Deitch Projects. The book will be available with four different jackets, each featuring a different Day-Glo color, an homage to Sprouse’s iconic album cover for Debbie Harry’s Rockbird.
