Valencia based Escif’s newest work is entitled ‘Brick/Break’ with obvious influence. The Spanish street artist is part of a new era of street artists who we’re big fans of at SLAMXHYPE. A group of artists blending bold historic influence in their paintings and merely using the streets as their canvas, just as comfortable in a gallery as on the streets, a group that includes the likes of Os Gemeos, Nunca, Baglione and Escif are what we consider the names to look out for moving into the new decade.

A Conversation with Jacob Kimvall and
Carlos “Mare 139” Rodriguez

FINE LINE: GRAFFITI ART AND PUBLIC SPACE:

A Conversation with Jacob Kimvall and Carlos “Mare 139” Rodriguez

As graffiti in New York City is increasingly criminalized, in other parts of the world Graffiti’s rawest and finest elements are finding their way into public spaces and major arts institutions recognizing the contributions of street art on popular culture and everyday cultural aesthetics. The conversation will explore the work of Carlos “Mare 139” Rodriguez and his evolving relationship to public space, galleries and the media also the work of art historian Jacob Kimvall, based in Stockholm, Sweden Mr. Kimvall has been working with various municipalities to preserve critical public spaces with historical significance for the Swedish Graffiti movement.

We humbly ask that you join us for what we hope is the beginning of a meaningful conversation around the historical implications of New York City’s Graffiti movement and how that visual arts culture is alive and thriving today.

In nine years Hip-Hop Theater Festival (HHTF) has grown into one of the most important outlets showcasing Hip-Hop arts in the country, featuring dance, theater, performance, the visual arts and music devoted to urban culture.

Sixeart achieved international fame in 2008 when he was commissioned by the Tate Modern in London to paint a mural on the building’s iconic river façade alongside fellow internationally acclaimed artists Os Gemeos, Faile, Blu, Nunca, and JR. This was the first major public museum display of street art in London.

His mixture of psychedelic abstraction and comic book-inspired figuration has become an essential element of the urban fabric in his hometown, Barcelona. His work has a childlike innocence combined with an almost hallucinogenic sense of second sight.

“Sinister tragicomedy with notes of psychopathology and touches of acid” is one definition Sixeart himself has offered of his unique style.

Having painted from an early age, Sixeart made a name for himself as a graffiti writer before developing his own highly personal visual language with a host of recurring figures and animals. “My own universe of characters comes from a happy childhood and a close contact with mother nature,” he explains. “Also, I feel that that childish style of mine helps keep me younger.”

The dreamlike quality of his work shows an affinity with Surrealist artists such as Joan Miró, another native of Barcelona, alongside whose works his own are often displayed.

“Street” artist and pop culture appropriator Shepaird Fairey is getting sued by the Assoc. Press for using an image of Obama he didn’t license. The
original image shot by Manny Garcia for the AP is under copyright ownership by AP. (You can bet poor Manny didn’t get more than a standard day rate (300 bucks) for this image as well) Now that Fairey has gotten all that press, sold all those posters, and is in the
Smithsonian Museum for his Obama un-authorized campaign poster the AP is pissed. RIghtly so. Andy Warhol was sued for using the Jackie Kennedy image to make 16 Jackies and lost. Give credit where credit is due.

AP alleges copyright infringement of Obama image

By HILLEL ITALIE – 18 hours ago

NEW YORK (AP) — On buttons, posters and Web sites, the image was everywhere during last year’s presidential campaign: A pensive Barack Obama looking upward, as if to the future, splashed in a Warholesque red, white and blue and underlined with the caption HOPE.

Designed by Shepard Fairey, a Los-Angeles based street artist, the image has led to sales of hundreds of thousands of posters and stickers, has become so much in demand that copies signed by Fairey have been purchased for thousands of dollars on eBay.

The image, Fairey has acknowledged, is based on an Associated Press photograph, taken in April 2006 by Manny Garcia on assignment for the AP at the National Press Club in Washington.

The AP says it owns the copyright, and wants credit and compensation. Fairey disagrees.

“The Associated Press has determined that the photograph used in the poster is an AP photo and that its use required permission,” the AP’s director of media relations, Paul Colford, said in a statement.

“AP safeguards its assets and looks at these events on a case-by-case basis. We have reached out to Mr. Fairey’s attorney and are in discussions. We hope for an amicable solution.”

“We believe fair use protects Shepard’s right to do what he did here,” says Fairey’s attorney, Anthony Falzone, executive director of the Fair Use Project at Stanford University and a lecturer at the Stanford Law School. “It wouldn’t be appropriate to comment beyond that at this time because we are in discussions about this with the AP.”

Fair use is a legal concept that allows exceptions to copyright law, based on, among other factors, how much of the original is used, what the new work is used for and how the original is affected by the new work.

A longtime rebel with a history of breaking rules, Fairey has said he found the photograph using Google Images. He released the image on his Web site shortly after he created it, in early 2008, and made thousands of posters for the street.

As it caught on, supporters began downloading the image and distributing it at campaign events, while blogs and other Internet sites picked it up. Fairey has said that he did not receive any of the money raised.

A former Obama campaign official said they were well aware of the image based on the picture taken by Garcia, a temporary hire no longer with the AP, but never licensed it or used it officially. The Obama official asked not to be identified because no one was authorized anymore to speak on behalf of the campaign.

The image’s fame did not end with the election.

It will be included this month at a Fairey exhibit at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston and a mixed-media stenciled collage version has been added to the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery in Washington.

“The continued use of the poster, regardless of whether it is for galleries or other distribution, is part of the discussion AP is having with Mr. Fairey’s representative,” Colford said.

Just heard about this documentary that focuses on the legal and societal troubles of a Montreal stenciler named Roadsworth. I wasn’t familiar with his work so I checked out the trailer and found that his work is an original take on the world of stenciling. Good to know there are people thinking about new ways to use stencils. I know the film is going to be screened around Canada not sure if it will make it beyond our borders but hopefully it will, as it seems like a thought provoking film.
