Sometimes, your close friend made you feel comfortable in a particular situation, and you would think that they are teasing you insensitive, but in reality, they would be doing it for their purpose. There is research published in the Association for psychological science, according to this research some of your close friends purposefully impose negative feelings on you because your friends think that these negative feelings will be beneficial for you in the long run. The main reason for this is because they care for you.

The leading scientist, Belen Lopez- Pere, who conducted the research, has explained that how many people can become cruel to be kind and can make someone feel worse in some dangerous situation that comes from a right place.

The primary hypothesis of their research study was to encourage the more and more participants of the research to imagine themselves being in someone else’s situation and predict that how they would react if they were in their shoes. They assumed that the participants would choose the most negative experience of their life to teach and to help others so that they can learn and reach their goals.

The scientists enlisted 140 individuals to take part in a lab study to test their hypothesis which involved a co-playing computer game with an unknown partner. One person is “player A,” and the other is “player B.” The main thing in the game was that they do not know that “player A” did not exist in reality.

Just right before the game started, these all people received a note from unknown player A. The letter explained that he went through a break-up and he was heartbroken. All these players were asked to imagine the feelings of player A, and they had to play the game if the unknown player A was the protagonist. Some of these participants were asked to remain emotionally detached with player A while the rest of them were asked to sympathize with the feeling of player A.

Depending on this, the participants got divided into two separate teams. One team was playing a first-person shooter game that is called Soldier of Fortune. In this game, they have to get rid of as many enemies as they could do. The other was playing a first-person game that is called Escape Dead Island. In this game, they were asked to escape a room that got filled with zombies.

All the participants got exposed to certain music, and some clips with the description after the game got finished. These clips had different levels of emotional subject matter. After this, these players got questioned that at which level between 1-7 they wanted that the Player-A to listen and read about the description of each those clips.

The results of these video clips indicated that the participants who sympathized with co-players, Player A’s feelings, they tried to generate strong emotions in their co-player that were important and connected to the whole purpose of the game. Some participants sympathized with Player A’s sentiments and played Shooter game; they focused on generating more anger in their co-player through video clips, those players chose to expose player-A to. On the other hand, the second team focused on creating more and more fear into the hearts of co-players by selecting the most emotional music to show them.

This research study concluded that people who empathized with Player A in the game, they wanted to generate stronger negative emotions as a way to shadow the feelings of the hurt they would have because of their heartbreak. During the game, the stronger negative emotions suggested a higher success rate at the end of this video clip that means that Player A would have felt a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment when the players won the game.
