Things you should ponder-It can be a hectic task to find a suitable rental apartment. But, the situation can worsen if you don’t ponder over these small details.
THINGS YOU SHOULD PONDER OVER WHILE RENTING AN APARTMENT
1. NUMBER OF SOCKETS
Make sure that there are sockets in every room for every kind of appliances because, if you don’t have them enough, you’ll end up getting caught in the extension cords. But, apart from that, also check for the voltage. Open the switch of the kettle and the microwave. If they don’t create a problem, that means that the power joints can hold the load nicely.

2. CHECK IF THE TV AND THE INTERNET ARE CONNECTED
Not everyone can stay in an apartment without a TV and an internet. It’s one of the necessities we all need. So, make sure that your apartment has them. If it’s missing, ask your owner if you can make the required arrangements for yourself and, to deduct the valid cost from the rent.
3. NO MOLDS
Moulds can give a shabby and an unattractive look to the house. Above all, breathing in more spores can be harmful to the health especially, when it comes to aged people. Places in the house with high humidity can cause dark fungal spots like in the kitchen, bathroom or near the windows. Make sure that you check for them.
4. ASK FOR METERS OF UTILITIES
To control your expenses make sure that there are meters in the house so that you can have a constant check on them. It is because the owner might not add utility bills in your rent which indicates that you’ll have to pay for them separately.
5. ENOUGH PARKING SPACE
If you own a car, think about a place where you can leave your car for parking. Check if there is a parking lot reserved for the owner or any place nearby. If not, then stroll nearby and look for the areas around where you can park your car and leave it overnight.
6. OPEN THE WINDOW
Open the window and, scrutinise if there are bars or buildings with lighted signs on them. The reason behind the advice is that the neon rays, coming through the window, can deprive you of the sleep due to prolonged insomnia. However, the view outside the window should be a secondary concern.
7. CHECK IF THERE WERE ANIMALS IN THE APARTMENT
Ask your owner if the person who lived before in the house had an animal with him. The reason being that many people are allergic to fur and, the hair on the carpets or in the corner can make your stay in the house next to impossible.
8. WINDOWS OPEN AND DOORS CLOSED
Once you go for checking, make it your priority to check if the doors can be closed properly and the home is secured because the constant fear of your property being unsafe can create additional problems for you. Next, check if the windows can be appropriately opened so that you don’t die from suffocation during the summer season.
9. WRITE DOWN THE PROPERTY OF THE APARTMENT
Rather than getting yourself accused of damaging the owner’s property, it’s always better to write in advance the entire wealth of the owner and, attach it to the contract. It would add to your advantage if you can mention in advance the damaged and defected pieces.
10. CHECK IF THE APARTMENT IS FOR SALE
What if one day you wake up to a surprise that your owner wants you to leave home as soon as possible because they’ve found a buyer? That won’t be any less than a nightmare. So, ensure that you look for a rental apartment which is not on sale. You can sue the owner in that case, but, prevention is better than cure.
11. WHAT IF SOMETHING BREAKS?
Ensure that it is already mentioned in the contract about who will pay the expenses in anything breaks without your fault. Is it the owner who will take up the charge to mend them.
12. HOW OFTEN WILL IT BE INSPECTED?
There are times when the owner wants to know the condition of their apartment, and, as a result, they might, at times, cross their boundaries and come to your room often. No doubt, their constant arrival might annoy you. So, it’s better to ask them about the frequency of their visit in the contract.
13. LIMITS OF GREED
It is essential on your part to inquire the amount by which the rent can be raised by the owner as, there comes a time when they start increasing the lease by the amount that won’t be affordable by you and, would be completely unrealistic. So, agree on these terms in advance.
14. CLEANLINESS OF THE APARTMENT
If you find a wholly shabby and a messy apartment for yourself, then say “No” directly because there can be much more dirty views behind. So, either ask the owner to clean it up or leave it and, look for another.
