What are the one technology that is 3,000 years old but still incorporated into TVs, laptops, smartphones and even vehicles? Yes, you guessed it right. It’s glass. For thousands of years, it has been part of human lives, now also more than before. But what about the future? Well, Digilens might be the answer to that.

Many people believed that even though humans have been using glass for several applications until now for several years, the futuristic application will be even more noteworthy.

Let’s see what kind of an impact glass has been on modern life and who was behind it all. Well, the answer to that is simple. Its a company called Corning which also started the Corning Museum of glass. Now, Corning has been around for manufacturing some revolutionary products for a long time. Like the glass, it made for Thomas Edison’s light bulbs or the cathode ray tubes for TVs. It also manufactured the Corning’s glass for iPhones which made touchscreen phones a possibility.  And as we know it, now it is used in almost every smartphone out there.

Now, what about the future for glass? Touchscreen everywhere? Malls, cars, public transport, all transformed into glasses for display? Well, with this kind of a future in mind, CEO of silicon valley based company Digilens, Mr. Chris Pickett is working on a tech that might change how we perceive information through our eyes. What it means is that Chris is working on a transparent screen that can be used in daily consumer vehicles like cars. He explains them as holographic waveguide displays and is somewhat imaginable as the ones we see in sci-fi movies.

Digilens has already installed such glass panels on jets and is now working towards cars to make it an end consumer product. With such transparent screens placed in front of the cars, Chris plans to make objects appear more real so that the driver would be less distracted to look elsewhere.

Transparent screens for cars is not all for Digilens as they are also trying to make augmented reality lenses that people can wear. The future with holographic images of people while interacting with them is not far. However, there is still a long way to go as we are yet to hear about a prototype from Digilens.

Another material that some people think would be the future of humankind is plastic. They can bend, they don’t break and also are a cheaper alternative. But it has got a lot of disadvantages on its side too. Mostly concerning environmental issues as plastic does not degrade naturally.

So how long until the future we see in sci-fi movies becomes a reality? Well, the answer to that is only something time will tell, but Digilens is doing what it can to make it a reality soon.
