A while back, I was on the phone with a photographer friend whom will remain unnamed.
He was at an old stomping ground of mine on assignment,
Ft Irwin, CA aka The National Training Center (NTC).
While I was in the Army we used to do rotations there from
Ft. Carson to play war games. He & I spoke about the staged cities built there.
Coincidentally, I then ran across a book at DASHWOOD Books,
titled CHICAGO by Adam Broomberg & Oliver Chanarin.
Eyal Weizman was a contributor,
which caught my eye because I’ve read his book
Hollow Land: Israel’s Architecture of Occupation.
CHICAGO is a mock city like the one at NTC.
Except this training ground is in Israel.
It is used for the same purposes. To train for urban warfare.
The pictures in the book make the place look like works of art.
It’s eerily strange and fascinating to see something like this pulled into this context.
